Located across from the Arènes de Nîmes, the Musée de la Romanité is a key site for understanding the history of Nîmes. Opened in 2018 and designed by Elizabeth de Portzamparc, this contemporary museum offers a journey through more than 25 centuries of history, from the earliest Gallic settlements to the medieval period.
Architecture that immediately stands out
The building is instantly recognizable thanks to its wavy glass façade, often compared to the folds of a Roman toga or the movement of a mosaic. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the design creates a dialogue with the nearby Arena, reflecting it and reinforcing the connection between past and present.
While the ancient monuments of Nîmes are defined by stone and permanence, the museum’s architecture feels light, transparent, and dynamic. Inside, a bright central atrium structures the space, with a fluid circulation path that guides visitors upward through time.
An immersive and accessible museum
The museum experience goes beyond traditional displays, with digital and interactive installations that make the content accessible to a wide audience.
The visit is organized around several major periods:
- the earliest inhabitants, including the Volcae Arecomici,
- the Roman period—the core of the museum,
- the transition to the Middle Ages and the legacy of Rome.
Statues, everyday objects, and reconstructions help bring these periods to life. One of the highlights is the collection of exceptional mosaics discovered locally, including during excavations on the museum site. These large, well-preserved works—often depicting mythological or decorative scenes—offer a vivid insight into the refinement of Roman domestic life.
An archaeological garden with free access
Behind the museum, the archaeological garden provides a quieter atmosphere. Freely accessible, it allows visitors to walk among remains of the ancient Roman ramparts and enjoy a landscaped Mediterranean setting in the heart of the city.
The rooftop: one of the best views in Nîmes
The rooftop terrace is one of the highlights of the site, offering a 360° panoramic view over Nîmes: the Arena directly opposite, the Tour Magne in the distance, and the rooftops stretching across the city.
Access to the rooftop is generally possible during opening hours, although conditions may vary. It can be visited independently of the museum tour in some cases, making it a popular spot for views and photography.
A lively cultural space
In addition to its permanent collection, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions, conferences, and events throughout the year. A panoramic restaurant and a museum shop complete the visit.
A strong symbol of the city
The museum was designed to interact with the Arènes and, more broadly, with the layered history of Nîmes. Its façade evokes both ancient mosaics and the passage of time, reflecting a city shaped by successive civilizations.
