(Mémorial des martyrs de la Résistance du Gard)

Located on Avenue Jean Jaurès in Nîmes, not far from the historic centre, the Memorial to the Martyrs of the Resistance of the Gard is an important site of remembrance. Inaugurated in 1954, it honors members of the Resistance, deportees, and civilian victims from the Gard region during the Second World War.

A symbolic pyramidal monument

The monument takes the form of a stone pyramid, a design that clearly distinguishes it from its surroundings while giving it a strong and almost sacred presence. More than a formal choice, this structure was conceived to establish a lasting memorial landmark within the urban landscape.

Today, the memorial continues to play an active role in public remembrance. Ceremonies are regularly held here, particularly on May 8, June 18, and November 11.

In Nîmes, this memorial complements the nearby Monument aux morts de Nîmes. While the war memorial primarily honors soldiers who died for France—especially during the First World War—the Resistance memorial focuses on those who fought, suffered, or were deported during the Second World War.

Together, they reflect two distinct but interconnected forms of remembrance: one centered on military sacrifice, the other on resistance, civic courage, and the experience of occupation.
