Maria-Theresien-Platz
One of Our Favorite Places in Vienna
This was one of our absolute favorite places to visit in Wien. With so many sites to see in the city, we often had to move quickly, but the collections here were so captivating that we stayed far longer than planned. The displays are breathtaking—stunning, fascinating, mind‑blowing. I think you can tell we loved it.
The museum covers an extraordinary range of subjects. You’ll find dazzling minerals, rocks, and meteorites; an impressive geology and fossil section; and remarkable prehistoric artifacts, including the famous Venus of Willendorf. The dinosaur skeletons are always a crowd‑pleaser, and the anthropology exhibits trace the origins of human evolution in a clear and engaging way. The zoology halls, filled with beautifully preserved taxidermy specimens—mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and fish—are equally compelling.
The building itself is magnificent, inside and out. The collections are thoughtfully arranged, and the architecture adds to the sense of grandeur. It’s one of the two identical museums facing each other on Maria‑Theresien‑Platz. The one with the small elephant statue at the entrance is the Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum). Directly across from it stands its twin, the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History).
One thing I noticed—and this seems to be common in several Viennese museums—is that if you don’t have a guide, you’re largely on your own. There’s rarely staff on the floor to answer questions. The upside is that you can explore entirely at your own rhythm, but if you’re someone who enjoys asking questions, you may feel the absence of on‑site experts.
Still, the experience was unforgettable. This museum left a lasting impression on all of us, and it remains one of the highlights of our time in Vienna.thm.
