Vienna – Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum)

Maria-Theresien-Platz

Never seen such a collection before.

Our perception of a Natural History Museum completely changed after this visit.  The collection is fantastic and impressive!

This was one of our favorite places to visit while in Wien. With so many sites to see in the city, we had to move quickly. However, the collections were so beautiful that we spent more time than expected.

The collections are breathtaking, stunning, mind-blowing,… I think you understand that we loved it. There is so much to see:

  • Minerals, rocks, meteorites collection
  • Geology fossils section
  • Pre-historic artifacts (Venus of Willendorf is here)
  • Dinosaur skeletons
  • Anthropology- the origin of human evolution
  • Zoology – taxidermy animals: mammals, birds, insects, snakes, fish,…

Beautiful building inside and out with well-disposed collections.

It is one of the two identical buildings in Maria Theresa Platz. The building with a small statue of an elephant in front is the Naturhistorishes (Museum of National History). The other building is the Kunthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History).

The only thing I realized, and it is the same observation in many museums in Wien, is, if you don’t have a guide, you are by yourself with no one to ask questions. The good news is you move at your rhythm.
