119, rue Saint-Jacques
Rich impressive style building in this surrounding
The Bank of Montreal is the oldest bank in Canada and was founded in 1817, under the name of Montreal Bank.
The Place D’Armes building, opened in 1847, used to be the head office of the bank but not anymore. Visit the inside but again no worries if it is closed, the exterior neoclassical style / Pantheon-like building deserves your attention.
In the same area you can see the Notre-Dame Basilica, the New York Life Building, the Aldred Building and more.
Many buildings in the area used to be major financial related institutions. The Bank of Commerce, Molson Bank, and the Stock Exchange are a few examples.
The museum presents some elements of discussion of how banks once operated. The access was free of charge in 2019.
