Halifax – Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel – Holy Cross Cemetery

1259 South Park Street

This tiny chapel in the middle of a cemetery seems overwhelmed by the number of burial monuments surrounding it. More than 20,000 persons, mostly of Irish descendants, have chosen the Holy Cross Cemetery as their final rest place.

It took incredible community cooperation to construct this beautiful chapel.  On August 31st, 1843, 2,000 volunteers met to build this religious meeting place in a single day using the pre-laid foundation. Of course, the final touches were completed a few days later. The first Mass was celebrated on September 17th, 1843.  Pretty remarkable.

You can find this church at the corner of South Park and South Streets.
