Montreal – Le 1000 De La Gauchetiere

An Architectural Icon in the Heart of Montreal

Towering over downtown Montreal’s skyline, 1000 De La Gauchetière is one of the city’s most iconic buildings. With 51 floors and a height of 205 meters (232 meters to the tip of its spire), it is one of the tallest skyscrapers in the city, reaching exactly the same elevation as Mount Royal—a requirement in compliance with municipal regulations (233 meters).

Inaugurated in 1992, this postmodern-style building was designed by the architectural firms Lemay & Associates and Dimakopoulos & Associates. Its distinctive silhouette is marked by a copper-clad triangular top and four rotunda-shaped entrances, also crowned with copper.

The façade, made of grey granite with copper accents and green-tinted glass, reflects natural light with elegance and adds a unique character to Montreal’s urban landscape.

A Vibrant and Accessible Space

1000 De La Gauchetière is much more than just an office tower. The first eight floors are home to lively public spaces: a bus terminal, a shopping concourse with a food court, and most notably, a unique indoor skating rink—Atrium Le 1000.

Located on the ground floor, this year-round rink is surrounded by restaurants, creating a welcoming and dynamic atmosphere. Skate rentals are available on-site, allowing everyone to enjoy this activity in the heart of the city.

The building is directly connected to Bonaventure metro station as well as Montreal’s extensive underground pedestrian network (RÉSO), making it easily accessible for both visitors and workers.

A Celebration of Art and Economic Heritage

The building’s lobby features two significant artworks. Arrêt sur image, an installation by artists Annie Lebel and Stéphane Pratte, greets visitors in a bright, open space. Suspended from the ceiling, a cascade of reflective panels creates a captivating visual effect that shifts with the light and the movement of passersby.

Also on display is La Murale des Grands bâtisseurs de l’économie du Québec, an initiative by the Institute for Governance (IGOPP). This mural pays tribute to the entrepreneurs and business families who have left a lasting impact on Quebec’s economic history.
