Montreal – Place Jean-Paul Riopelle

Just steps from Old Montreal, Place Jean-Paul Riopelle makes a nice stop to include in your itinerary—either as a peaceful break during your exploration or as the starting point for a day heading toward downtown.

Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923–2002), a Montreal-born artist, is internationally celebrated for his dynamic sculptures and abstract paintings. The centerpiece of this square is La Joute (The Joust/The Game), a striking bronze fountain sculpture created by Riopelle in 1976. Originally installed near the Olympic Stadium, it was relocated here after his death to anchor this public space, which is now dedicated to his memory. A statue of Riopelle stands at one end of the square, completing the tribute.

In the summer months, La Joute becomes even more captivating—surrounded by a circular basin of water and an impressive ring of fire that activates as part of a fountain display. The square itself is a relaxing urban retreat, featuring benches and a variety of native trees.

While La Joute offers a taste of Riopelle’s genius, you can explore more of his work at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Nearby, you’ll also find the colorful façade of the Palais des Congrès (Montreal’s Convention Centre) and the InterContinental Hotel, adding a modern contrast to the artistic ambiance of the square.
