At the summit of the village of Les Baux-de-Provence, the Château des Baux-de-Provence opens onto a vast esplanade offering a spectacular panorama of the region. From this viewpoint, the eye sweeps across the Valley of Les Baux, the Alpilles hills, the Crau plain, and, on clear days, as far as the Mediterranean Sea.

The Costapéra Plateau, a lively and dominant natural site

The esplanade occupies part of the Costapéra Plateau, the highest point of the commune at approximately 310 meters (1000+ft) above sea level. This rocky promontory overlooks the perched village and provides an exceptional strategic vantage point. While the plateau refers to the broader geographical feature, the esplanade designates the developed area if free to access.

It sometimes hosts demonstrations of medieval siege engines and serves as a gathering space for visitors. It is also one of the most popular viewpoints, where visitors pause to admire the iconic landscapes of Les Baux—limestone cliffs, olive groves, and the windswept scenery of the Alpilles.

The windmill, memory of a rural past

On the esplanade stands a reconstructed Provençal windmill, recalling the agricultural life that once sustained the village. These mills, owned by the Lords of Les Baux, were used to grind grain brought by local farmers. They were destroyed in 1632 on the orders of Nicolas de L’Hôpital, duc de Vitry during the dismantling of the château under Cardinal Richelieu. Rebuilt in the 20th century for heritage purposes, the mill is no longer functional but remains a powerful symbol of the Provençal landscape.

The Charloun Rieu monument

At the far end of the esplanade stands the monument dedicated to Charloun Rieu (1846–1924), born Charles-Henri Rieu. Created by sculptor Louis Botinelly and inaugurated in 1930, this bust honors the “poet of Les Baux.” Coming from a rural background, he celebrated in his writings the rugged beauty of the Alpilles, capturing the spirit of this land. Positioned facing the landscape he so vividly described, the monument embodies the deep connection between culture, place, and memory.

A panorama of nature, history, and culture

Between medieval remains, echoes of rural life, and literary tribute, the château esplanade is a unique place where the many layers of Les Baux-de-Provence converge. More than a simple viewpoint, it is a true open-air balcony onto Provençal identity.
