Budapest – St Stephen’s Basilica

On Pest side of Budapest, sits an imposing Basilica.

The Roman Catholic Minor Basilica is named after King Stephen, the first canonized King of Hungary, thus explaining the reference to both King and Saint.

It took 54 years to build this place of worship.  Unfortunately, before its completion, the dome collapsed and work had to be completely restarted. It happened in 1868, 17 years after the beginning of the construction.  It was finally completed in 1905.

While the interior is rich and the artwork is mind blowing, a unique element is the mummified right hand of King St Stephen.
