Portara of Apollo – The Icon of Naxos
As you arrive in Naxos by ferry, one of the first things to catch your eye is the island’s emblem: the Portara. This impressive 2,500-year-old marble doorway stands tall on a small islet just off the coast and is connected to the mainland by a paved footpath. From the harbor, it’s just a short walk—and absolutely unmissable.
Originally intended as the entrance to a grand temple, the Portara was part of a project that was never completed. Construction stopped due to war, and today only the massive doorway remains. It’s often believed that the temple was meant to honor Apollo, the Greek god of music, poetry, and light—especially since the Portara faces Delos, his mythical birthplace. However, some theories suggest it may have been dedicated to Dionysus, god of wine and festivity, who was also worshipped on Naxos.
A Perfect Sunset Spot
Whether or not you’re into mythology, the Portara is a magical spot at sunset. From its elevated position, it offers sweeping views of the Aegean Sea, the harbor, and the town of Naxos bathed in golden light.
A Fascinating Contrast
As you walk toward the Portara, notice how the sea behaves differently on each side of the footpath—rough and windy on one side, while calm and beach-friendly on the other. It’s a striking natural contrast.
From this vantage point, take a moment to admire Naxos Town, with its castle perched on the hill and the whitewashed houses below, which from a distance can resemble a Minecraft-like maze.
