Located in the upper part of Les Baux-de-Provence, Place Saint-Vincent is one of the most emblematic spaces in the village. Both the forecourt of the Église Saint-Vincent and a natural belvedere overlooking the Alpilles, it offers an intimate, shaded setting rich in history.
A privileged location at the top of the village
Situated close to the Château des Baux-de-Provence and the Chapel of the White Penitents, the square lies slightly away from the busiest visitor routes. Lined with stone walls and shaded by trees, it opens onto a remarkable view of the Baux valley and the surrounding Alpilles hills.
It is a peaceful stop where visitors can rest and take in the landscape.
Saint-Vincent Church: a remarkable rock-cut monument
The square is inseparable from Saint-Vincent Church, built between the 12th and 16th centuries. Partially carved into the rock, it is a striking example of Romanesque architecture adapted to the natural terrain.
Listed as a historic monument, the church houses stained-glass windows donated in 1962 by Prince Rainier III, as well as a 16th-century cenotaph of the Manville family.
This site once stood at the center of the village’s religious life, hosting processions, ceremonies, and gatherings, particularly those of confraternities such as the White Penitents.
A square at the heart of community life
Since the late Middle Ages, Place Saint-Vincent has played a central role in village life. It served as a meeting place for residents and as a ceremonial space, especially during traditional events such as the Christmas “pastrage,” featuring the offering of a lamb by shepherds.
It reflects both the spiritual and communal dimensions of Les Baux.
A remarkable heritage ensemble
Several key heritage elements surround the square:
- Saint-Vincent Church and its rock-cut architecture,
- the Hôtel des Porcelet, now home to the Musée Yves Brayer,
- the Chapel of the White Penitents,
- and a monumental cross marking the space.
A place of contemplation between stone and landscape
With its benches, shaded areas, and open views over the valley, Place Saint-Vincent is highly photogenic. It perfectly illustrates the fusion of architecture and rock that defines Les Baux-de-Provence.
At once a place of reflection, a scenic viewpoint, and a historic heart of the village, it embodies the balance between heritage, landscape, and memory that makes Les Baux so unique.
