38 Cours Mirabeau
A hidden treasure on the Cours Mirabeau
Among the grand townhouses lining the famous Cours Mirabeau, number 38 stands out for its majestic façade and understated elegance. Known as Hôtel d’Espagnet, it is a perfect example of Aix-en-Provence’s classical 17th-century architecture and reflects the wealth and refinement of the Provençal nobility.
Architecture representative of Aix in the Grand Siècle
Built between 1647 and 1651 for Pierre Maurel, a wealthy textile merchant ennobled and Secretary to the Court of Accounts of Provence, the building is one of the first townhouses in the Mazarin district. Its façade, inspired by Michelangelo, features three superimposed classical orders – Doric on the ground floor, Ionic on the first floor, and Corinthian on the second and two massive atlantes supporting a balcony, elements that are particularly striking. Elegantly wrought iron balconies and carefully carved window frames further enhance the building’s restrained and refined style typical of the Cours Mirabeau.
History and current use
Acquired in the 19th century by the Espagnet family, the hôtel has retained its original charm despite some alterations and now houses the Aix-en-Provence Commercial Court. Owned by the municipality, it is occasionally open for visits and events while preserving its public function and architectural heritage. Over the centuries, Hôtel d’Espagnet has welcomed magistrates, scholars, and notable figures of the city, cementing its place in Aix-en-Provence’s history.
The Commercial Court
The Commercial Court, located in the hôtel, is a first-instance jurisdiction specializing in commercial disputes. Composed of volunteer consular judges, themselves merchants or business leaders elected by their peers for two-year terms, it rules on conflicts between traders and companies, commercial contracts, as well as insolvency proceedings such as reorganizations or liquidations. Its registry also manages the commercial and corporate register (RCS), making it a central actor in local economic life.
The Cours Mirabeau, a showcase of Aix’s lifestyle
The Cours Mirabeau, lined with majestic plane trees, lively cafés, elegant terraces, and monumental fountains, forms the historical and vibrant heart of Aix-en-Provence. Hôtel d’Espagnet is located very close to the 17th-century Fontaine des Neuf-Canons. Here, the dialogue between historical architecture and contemporary life is particularly harmonious, offering passersby a glimpse of Aix’s history and refinement.
Architectural similarities and distinctions
The hôtel shares some features with the Palais Vendôme, particularly the three superimposed classical orders and fluted pilasters. However, its transition from Mannerism to Baroque is distinguished by fruit garlands, sculpted mascarons, the use of local stone, and adjoining gardens, giving the building its unique character.
