Place Richelme is located in the very heart of Aix-en-Provence’s historic center, in an area that has been continuously occupied since Antiquity. While the exact location of the Roman forum of Aquae Sextiae remains uncertain, the square falls within the perimeter of the ancient and medieval city. Its name, recorded as early as the Middle Ages, does not refer to Cardinal Richelieu but most likely comes from an old family name or a local landowner, following a common toponymic origin in Aix.

A popular and authentic square

Unlike grand monumental squares, Place Richelme retains a simple, popular character. Lined with old buildings featuring understated façades, it reflects the everyday life of Aix, far from the splendor of the mansions in the Mazarin district. Located close to Place des Prêcheurs and the courthouse, it has long served as a hub of passage and social exchange in the heart of the old town.

The daily food market

Place Richelme is best known for its food market, held every morning for almost the entire year. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, cheeses, olives, aromatic herbs, honey, and Provençal specialties fill the colorful stalls. This commercial tradition continues a long-standing practice, as the square has hosted food-related activities since the Middle Ages. Popular with both locals and visitors, the market gives the square its characteristic morning bustle.

A space for socializing and conviviality

Around the market, café terraces and small restaurants fill up from the early hours of the day. The square then becomes a prime spot to observe local life, enjoy a coffee, or chat in the shade of the old façades. The layout remains intentionally simple, leaving room for sociability and commercial activity.

The Wild Boar Fountain

Partially hidden among the café terraces, the Wild Boar Fountain rises discreetly at the heart of Place Richelme. Installed in the 1980s as part of the square’s redevelopment, it adds a touch of character and movement to this lively market setting.  It features a bronze sculpture of a wild boar, a replica of the famous Porcellino of Florence, originally created by sculptor Pietro Tacca in the 17th century. A symbol of luck and prosperity, the animal attracts passersby who, according to tradition, stroke its snout to bring themselves good fortune. Polished by thousands of touches, it now shines with a distinctive gleam.

A square with a Provençal soul

Without being spectacular in size or monuments, Place Richelme charms with its lively and genuine atmosphere. Animated by the morning market and calmer afterward, it offers an authentic glimpse into daily life in Aix.
