Marseille – The Municipal Opera House

2 Rue Molière

A Vibrant and Iconic Venue

The Marseille Opera House, located in the heart of the city near the old-port, was rebuilt in 1924 after a fire destroyed the original 19th-century building. The new structure, designed in an elegant Art Deco style, is distinguished by its monumental façade adorned with geometric motifs and stylized sculptures that embody the characteristic aesthetics of the period. Vertical columns, large arched windows, and decorative bas-reliefs give the building an imposing yet refined presence, harmonizing beautifully with the urban landscape.

Its auditorium, designed for optimal acoustics, can seat over 1,700 spectators.

The Opera House is a cultural landmark in Marseille, offering a rich and varied program: classical operas, ballets, symphonic concerts, and contemporary productions. It reflects both the city’s artistic dynamism and its strong attachment to the lyrical tradition.

Guided Tours

The Marseille Opera also offers guided tours, generally organized several times a week, especially during tourist and cultural seasons. These visits allow guests to explore the backstage areas, the main auditorium, stage sets, interior architecture, and to learn about the building’s history.

Tours are most often held on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, though days and times may vary depending on the program and season. For updated information, check here: https://opera-odeon.marseille.fr/ (French only)
