I had the chance to go to NYC for business and since I was alone and traveling by plane, I decided to treat myself by arriving earlier and walk on the Brooklyn Bridge for the view of the city, take a closer look at the architectural details, and get some exercise. Easily plan for 30 minutes and even more if you make a few stops and even more if you want the perfect photo. Note that the Brooklyn Bridge Park on the side of Brooklyn Heights gives beautiful views of the bridge.
I must say that in the morning, crossing the Brooklyn Heights Bridge to reach Manhattan was a charm. Watch carefully where you are going, because you will come across workers, runners, tourists, and bicycles,… and that is part of the beauty. Despite the elevation of the bridge in its center, access on both sides is a gentle slope, thus joining the Civic Center on the Manhattan side.
The bridge was the first to cross the East River in 1883 and, unfortunately, cost the lives of more than 20 workers. It was the first suspension bridge of such magnitude in the world, which took 14 years to build and spontaneously took the name Great East River Bridge. The designer and construction manager, Mr. John A. Roebling, was among the victims. His son took over but had to retire due to health complications. He still manages to oversee the progress of the work from a distance with the help of his wife.
Its two stone arches are impressive and emblematic of the city. There are six lanes of road traffic plus pedestrian and cyclist lanes. It is also possible to come across street vendors enthusiastically offering their merchandise.
For the view, the historic aspect, the fresh air, it is worth to visit.
Combine this visit with City Hall Park, Woolworth Building and the City Center
