Montreal – Hotel Mount Stephen

1440 Drummond Street

This distinctive building on Drummond Street, nestled between de Maisonneuve Boulevard and Sainte-Catherine Street, stands out as a unique architectural landmark in the area. Slightly set back from the street, it might go unnoticed unless you’re passing right in front of it. Originally the residence of George Stephen, a successful immigrant entrepreneur, the building later became a hotel in 2017. Mr. Stephen, who first prospered in the textile industry, went on to become the president of the Bank of Montreal and the inaugural president of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Completed in 1883, the mansion served as the Mount Stephen Club from 1926 to 2011, a private club catering to businessmen.

The building was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1971 for its architectural style and its first prominent occupant, and was further recognized by the Quebec government in 1975.
