New York City – Federal Hall National Memorial

26 Wall Street

Typical event when visiting a city:  construction. The temple-style building was under construction when we visited in April 2024.

Built between 1833 and 1842, this site is recognized by the presence of the statue of George Washington, the first and only President of the United States to be sworn in at this location in April 1789 before Washington DC was chosen as the federal capital and activities were moved temporarily to Philadelphia.

The original 1699 building was the City Hall and Courthouse and was the first Capitol Building and the nation’s first Supreme Court before operations moved. It was also the customs services and the treasury services for a while.

Federal Hall is now a museum, open Monday through Friday, chronicling early American history. Notice the use of marble floors.
